Advanced Video Techniques on the iPad

If you enjoy making videos for class and for pleasure then this is the session for you.  Since your iPad is a powerful multimedia tool, you will learn how you can improve your video production skills through the stages of production and post production.  We will cover the basic shots and camera movements, how to stabalize your video, how to conduct an interview and then how to take all of that video and create a completed video using iMovie.

Bridge Craft

Can you name the longest bridge in the world? What is the highest suspension bridge in the world? Love bridges?

Come build a bridge out of 200 popsicle sticks that can withstand weight, while also being durable and aesthetically pleasing. Work in teams of "engineers" to design and build a bridge. This is great for students who want to be creative, but love to break things too!

Cyanotypes

Cyanotype prints are a fun and easy way to create imagery using the sun and chemistry. Create more than one image on paper from found objects and plant materials.

Cyanotype printing is an alternative (antique) photographic process using non-toxic, light sensitive chemicals. Placing objects or images of various transparencies on top of the coated paper creates a lasting image.

Create A Video Game Using Scratch

Have you ever wondered how video games are made? Have you ever wanted to create your own video game but don't know where to start. In this workshop, we will use Scratch to learn the fundamentals of coding while building a simple video game like Plants vs Zombies or Space Invaders. You will learn how to animate graphics, use fundamental programming tools like loops and if statements, and make objects interact with each other. By the end of the workshop, you will have a basic but functional game that you can customize and build upon later.

No coding experience or special software is needed, but all participants are encouraged to bring their own laptops (iPads will not work for this!). The school has a limited number of laptops that we can loan for the workshop.

Have you ever dreamt that you were falling off a cliff? Being attacked by a bear? Or making an announcement at School Meeting without any clothes on!? What do our dreams mean? How can we use the vivid imagery that exists within our subconscious in our artwork? In this workshop, we will explore the psychology of dreams through the use of dream journals, meditation, and painting. You will be asked to recall specific dreams, images, memories, and nightmares to explore and analyze. While there are many theories and studies about the science of dreams, you are the expert of your subconscious and, only you, can unlock the true meaning of your dreams.

Friendship Bracelets

Originally, these colorful bands were invented by Indians in Central and South America. According to tradition, you tie a bracelet onto the wrist of a friend who may wish for something at that moment. The bracelet should be worn until it is totally worn out and falls off by itself, at which moment the wish is supposed to come true.
Join this group with Ms. Grosart and learn to make these bracelets for the first time, or rejuvenate your skills from childhood. Hand-to-Hand Stage Combat Workshop

Christina Johnston (who has been directing and choreographing for over 20 years, and holds a black belt in Aikido) will teach fundamental maneuvers of stage combat with a major emphasis on safety. This workshop will include instruction in the art of unarmed hand-to-hand stage fighting and basic stage combat choreography, and will focus on punches, slaps, and kicks. Additionally, tumbling with an emphasis on showing how this relates to falls and throws, coupled with chokes and hair pulls.  Students should come in comfortable clothes that allow freedom of movement.

Henna Tattoos

Henna has been used to decorate bodies as part of social and holiday celebrations since the late Bronze Age in the eastern Mediterranean. Henna is regarded as having blessings, and is applied for luck, joy, and beauty. Some even believe that it is a divine experience to adorn your body by henna. At the simplest, Henna is a paste made out of crushed leaves and twigs of henna plant. When the paste is applied to the skin it leaves orange to dark maroon stain that will last up to 14 days.

Kira Szalma taught dance at NHS this winter as the teacher of our co-curricular dance program. Having danced since she was 11 years old, Kira is a recent graduate of Plymouth State University. Kira has worked with numerous professional choreographers such as Amy Marshall and Chad Levy of Amy Marshall Dance Company, Charmaine Wells of Refractions Dance Collective, and many others. Kira is a hardworking and energetic individual with a passion for dance. She is looking forward to spreading the joy of dance to the more NHS students! Happy Dancing!

Holi Color Festival

Holi is a spring festival, also known as the festival of colours or the festival of love. It is an ancient Hindu religious festival which has become popular with non-Hindus in many parts of South Asia, as well as people of other communities outside Asia.  In Braj region of India, where Krishna grew up, the festival is celebrated for 16 days in commemoration of the divine love of Radha for Krishna, a Hindu deity. The festivities officially usher in spring, with Holi celebrated as a festival of love.


In this workshop we will learn about this Indian tradition and then have our own color festival!  We will use the same type of powdered color as is used in the Color Runs.  Be prepared to get colored, and have fun!

Wear a white t-shirt and shorts you don't mind getting color on.  Most of the color will wash out.

From simple snap shot touch-ups to more artistic and advanced manipulations, students in this workshop will have the opportunity to shoot, edit, and print their photos. Find out how to create dramatic black and white images, perfect the color in your landscape shots, or add artsy blur or saturation to your photo. Even the experienced Photoshop user will leave with a few new tricks up their sleeve!

Juggle!

Juggling is a kind of magic. And the key to all magic is that what the audience sees is different from what the magician (or juggler) is actually doing. In this workshop we will break down the three ball cascade pattern of juggling. Over the course of the workshop you will progress from throwing one ball back and forth between your hands to juggling three objects (and maybe even trying out some simple tricks). You will probably learn enough about juggling to teach your friends—or you can keep the secrets of juggling to yourself.

Learn to make a painting with a camera!  Light paintings are when you move a laser pointer, Christmas lights, or other colorful light in the dark and make a long exposure.    We will teach you how to use your camera to create beautiful abstract images of color and light.

Make the Pieces Fit!

“Make the Pieces Fit” will explore one of the oldest hobbies known to us, an activity that is fun for all ages. In this session, you will explore the basics of designing a puzzle with a theme and creating the pieces to fit together with other students. Once the designs are completed, puzzle pieces will then be exchanged with other students and a unique puzzle design will result. Become a piece of the New Hampton puzzle!

Pitch Perfect! (Sing Along)

This is an open sing along for all students regardless of experience.  We will be singing songs from Taylor Swift to Rhianna!  This workshop needs students with great attitudes and a willingness to take a risk and have fun.

We will culminate each session with a laid back traveling performance.  It will give an opportunity for students who have never performed the opportunity to do so in a relaxed environment.

Printmaking

In this workshop you will learn both basic and advanced r printmaking techniques.  You will learn how to use foam plates for relief printing, and create rints with multiple layers for monoprints.   You will have a lot of time to play with the various techniques and make a few finished prints of your own.

Slovenian Bee Board Painting

Green plains, snowy mountains, warm beaches and fields and fields of flowers cover the landscape of Slovenia. A small country in the northern part of the former Yugoslavia, Slovenia is a special place with deep roots in the past. Art and agriculture have been mainstays since the early days. One of the most revered art forms is the Bee Board; these colorful boards protect the entrances to hives and are often covered in scenes depicting folktales or religious stories. Come paint your own Bee Board to display in your home or dorm room!

Spoken Word

With an emphasis on performance based poetry, students will focus on the aesthetics and word-play within poetry. We will watch various videos of high school poetry slam contestants, as well as famous poetry slam greats. Various prompts will be introduced to the group to help provide participants with focus, themes, perspective, goals, and topics. The conclusion of this session will require participants to participate in a poetry slam, and finalists will be selected by the group and guest judges.

Spring String!

Do you have a lacrosse pocket in need of repair? Or simply needs new everything?

Time to dust off that old lacrosse head and give it a face-lift! In this workshop, participants will explore various techniques and methods for stringing their own lacrosse sticks.

All levels! No experience necessary!

To open, participants will take part in a grand conversation touching on different pocket styles, mesh types, pocket break-in and upkeep. Next, students will prepare the materials they will need for the construction process. Finally students will begin the fabrication of the pocket. Each pocket will include a top-string, two sidewalls, and a bottom lace.

Join the Spring String! Repair, refurbish, or replace your old pocket and take home some functional art that you created.

In this workshop you will have the opportunity to photograph and document the biodiversity of New Hampton.   Walking through the woods and streams with Mr. Brummer is an experience that won't be forgotten. He can identify all things alive and growing.   

In conjunction with National Geographic, this GREAT NATURE PROJECT documents the biodiversity of every region around the world.  You will use you cameras or phone cameras to document the biodiversity that you will find.

The Internal Martial Arts of China: From Principles to Practical Self-Defense

In the West, martial arts are primarily understood as methods of violence--but could there be a deeper, more holistic value embedded in traditional martial practices? Are such traditional arts still valid for modern day self-defense? Everyone, especially beginners, is invited to explore these questions through discussion and plenty of hands-on learning in this two-part workshop:

•    The morning session will focus on familiarizing ourselves with the essential mechanics and philosophies of two traditional Chinese martial arts--the meditative Taijiquan (Tai Chi) and the deceptive Baguazhang.

•    The afternoon session will mainly consist of simple and practical self-defense techniques distilled from the arts introduced in the morning session.

Both workshops involve only gentle movements that most people should find easy and comfortable to perform. It's important to wear loose fitting clothes, comfortable clothes and flat shoes (no heels/boots please). Bare feet are welcome. It is recommended, but not necessary, to attend both sessions.

Tie Dye

Calling all Hippies!  You know who you are.  Learn how to tie dye clothing to make retro tee shirts or simply tie dye Buddhist prayer flags.  For those more experienced tie dyers, we will be challenging you to more intricate designs such as tie dying a heart design or a smiley face on your shirt.  Please bring several clean white tee shirts (or other interesting pieces of white clothing) and wear clothing that you will not mind getting some stains on.

Upcycle!

Come change your old t-shirts into something new. There are endless possibilities, but some of your choices include: a new skirt or dress, a stuffed animal or reusable shopping bag or rug. This is a great way to make something old new again!

Verse, Rhythm, and Performance

In hopes of performing our poems in front of a small audience during our lunch break, participants will have the opportunity to blend their poems with rhythm, rhyme, background beats, and focus on performance and delivery. We will start the session with some short inspirational videos focused on poetry slams, rap battles, and modern day lyrical geniuses. Various prompts will be offered in order to inspire and help students create their own topics, themes, ideas, and delivery. Each student will be given a certain beat, time frame, and be expected to perform/deliver their rhythmic verses by the end of the workshop.

In this workshop we will write our stories. It will consist of writing advice, exercises, and prompts. You will have the opportunity to share, but you will not have to. This workshop is about getting those stories you have onto the page because to write our lives is to work through them to know ourselves better. It'll be a fun and meaningful workshop.

World Drumming

This course will explore indigenous African rhythms and their use in everyday life. No music reading is required, but you must be a good listener. This is an ensemble format. Drums will be provided, or you can bring your own.

Jared has had the opportunity to perform with some great artists such as Stan Trujillo, (saxman for the Woody Herman and Stan Kenton Orchestras), Steve Rucker (drummer with the Bee Gees), Randy Roos (Club D'Elf), Shawn Monteiro, Kimberly Dahme (bassist for Boston) Tony Sarno (Blood Sweat and Tears, The Thunderhawks, Peter Tork), Al Hospers (Buddy Rich Big Band, Blood Sweat and Tears), Barry Mitterhoff (Hot Tuna, Silk City) as well as many other fine musicians. His main love is jazz and improvisational music, but will absolutely play any music that has power, meaning, and most of all...soul. He is a proud endorser of Silverfox Drumsticks and Grover Pro Percussion.

Wrapping and Strapping in Sports Medicine

You will have an opportunity to lean basic wrapping and taping techniques used in every day sports. You will learn how to tape ankles, knee's, shoulder's and elbows for treatment and prevention of sports injuries. You will also learn how to apply a basic ace bandage needed for support or to prevent swelling. The new K-Tape concept will also be demonstrated.

This dance class will be a cardio workout!  
 Zhumba combines steps from hip hop, salsa, merengue, and other Latin dances in a high intensity dance workout.
